Pupils from a secondary school based in the south of Tenerife have earned a spot in the Guinness World Records thanks to an innovative idea led by their P.E. teacher Ángel Luis Martel.
The Instituto de Educación Secundaria Luis Diego Cuscoy in Cabo Blanco, successfully completed an impressive display of coordination and teamwork, when 100 pupils from the school kept 179 balloons in the air for one minute, setting a new world record.
On Thursday, April 25th, at precisely 10:30am the stage was set as the students took their place in the school sports hall, balloons in hand, waiting for the whistle to go to start their record attempt.
To ensure the validity of the record, independent witnesses, including officers from the Arona Local Police, along with the deputy mayor of the Arona, Clari Pérez, and the sports councillor, Luis Sierra, were all present to verify the count of balloons in motion.
Following the event, all evidence of the attempt was submitted to the Guinness World Records team, and after three months of anticipation, confirmation has finally arrived. The official Guinness World Records website now proudly lists this remarkable achievement and recognises the students, all aged between 15 and 18 years old, as record breakers.
In a congratulatory message, Guinness World Records stated: "Congratulations! We are pleased to announce that your application for 'Most balloons kept in the air for one minute while standing (team of 100)' has been accepted, and you are now officially a Guinness World Records title holder."
The school are immensely proud of the recognition with the principal, Esther del Val, along with Ángel Martel, other physical education teachers, several faculty members, and hundreds of students, all contributing to the successful world record attempt.
The Canary Islands are no strangers to Guinness World Records. The most recent prior achievement was recorded in the town of Moya, in Gran Canaria, where the Hernández-Pérez family secured the world record for the highest combined age of 12 living siblings.
In September 2022, the combined ages of the siblings totalled an astonishing 1,058 years and 249 days. The family, consisting of seven brothers and five sisters, ranges in age from 76 to 98 years old.
The record was achieved when the family, during a reunion, realised they could surpass the previous record. They gathered the necessary documentation and contacted Guinness World Records, who officially confirmed the record in September 2022.
