The Guardia Civil has arrested a man following a serious stabbing involving his partner at their home in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana in Gran Canaria.

The incident occurred during the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) and resulted in the 38-year-old woman being taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds.

According to information released following the incident, the alleged attacker was aged 40 and contacted the Guardia Civil himself and reported that he had stabbed the woman.

Officers were subsequently dispatched to the property, where the victim was found suffering from several wounds.

She was transferred urgently to hospital for medical treatment and was reported to be undergoing surgery on Wednesday morning. Her condition was described as reserved, meaning doctors had not provided a definitive prognosis.

The man was arrested in connection with the attack as the Guardia Civil began its investigation into the circumstances surrounding what happened.

One of the important details to emerge from the case is that the woman was already included in Spain's VioGén system, which is used by the authorities to monitor and assess cases involving gender-based and domestic violence.

However, according to information attributed to the Government Delegation, her inclusion in the system related to a different person and not the man arrested following this incident.

Her existing police risk assessment was reportedly classified as low.

The VioGén system brings together information from different public bodies and police forces to help assess the level of risk faced by victims and determine what protective measures may be necessary.

Investigators will now work to establish the precise circumstances surrounding this morning's attack.

The case comes amid continuing efforts by police and other authorities across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain to identify people considered at risk of domestic or gender-based violence and intervene before situations escalate.
