Plans for 51 new public homes in Adeje have moved another step forward after the Canary Islands Government started the contracting process for the €9.4 million development.

The project will provide 51 protected public homes together with parking spaces, and is intended to increase the supply of social and affordable rental accommodation in the south of Tenerife.

The Canary Islands Government confirmed that the development has an estimated value of €9,406,484 and is being managed through the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), which has now initiated the corresponding contracting procedure.

It forms part of a considerably wider public housing programme for the south of the island.

Three developments planned in Adeje, Arona and Guía de Isora will together provide 134 protected homes and 134 parking spaces, representing an estimated total investment of almost €29.85 million before IGIC.

The Adeje development will ultimately become part of the public housing stock and is intended for social and affordable rental.

The project is being financed under Programme 6 of Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which supports the construction of social rental housing in energy-efficient buildings using European Next Generation EU funding.

The investment comes at a time when access to affordable long-term accommodation remains one of the biggest issues facing residents in Tenerife, particularly in southern municipalities where housing demand is high.

However, there is an important distinction for residents interested in the new homes.

The latest announcement does not mean the 51 properties have been completed or are currently available for applications.

The development itself has already progressed through earlier planning and technical stages. The latest step is the start of the contracting process, moving the project closer towards construction.

Details of when building work will begin, when the homes are expected to be completed and how residents will eventually be able to apply for them will emerge as the development moves through the procurement and construction process.

The Adeje scheme forms part of a much larger push to increase public housing across Tenerife.

The latest figures indicate that 1,137 public homes are currently at different stages of development on the island. Of those, 496 are planned, 620 are under construction and 21 have already been completed.
