Low-cost airline Volotea has dropped a number of routes to the Canary Islands from its winter schedule, affecting connections with Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Lanzarote is among the hardest hit, with four of the airline’s nine routes to the island no longer available for the winter season. Flights linking Lanzarote with Brest, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and Toulouse in France have been removed from the airline’s booking system.

This leaves five Volotea routes serving Lanzarote, connecting the island with Asturias in northern Spain and the French cities of Lille, Lyon, Montpellier and Nantes.

The reductions extend beyond Lanzarote. Volotea has removed around 20 routes across its wider Spanish network as it reorganises its aircraft ahead of the winter season.

In the Canary Islands, flights from Bordeaux to Fuerteventura and Tenerife South have also been withdrawn. The airline has also removed its Lyon to Gran Canaria service and its Brest to Tenerife South connection.

For now, the changes are understood to apply only to the winter schedule, leaving open the possibility that some of the affected routes could return for the summer season.

The changes come as Volotea reorganises its fleet of 42 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft following the award of new public connectivity contracts in mainland Spain.

The airline is preparing to operate five domestic routes from A Coruña, connecting the airport with Alicante, Bilbao, Málaga, Seville and Valencia. The new services are expected to begin before the end of the year and will provide more than 200,000 seats annually.

Volotea will also launch a direct Pamplona-Seville route in November, operating twice a week and marking the airline’s first services from Pamplona Airport.
