Young people in Puerto del Rosario can now apply for financial help towards the deposit on a rented home, under a new scheme aimed at making it easier to move into independent accommodation.

The council says Puerto del Rosario, which is the capital of Fuerteventura, is the first municipality in Spain to introduce a specific grant designed to help young people cover rental deposits.

The scheme is open to people aged between 18 and 35 who meet the eligibility requirements. The rented property must be their main home and must be located within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.

Applicants must have signed their rental agreement between 1st January 2026 and the closing date for applications.

The council says the initiative is intended to tackle one of the biggest upfront costs faced by young people when renting a property. Deposits, alongside other initial expenses, can make moving into a new home difficult even for those able to afford the monthly rent.

Puerto del Rosario Mayor David de Vera said the scheme responds to the difficulties many young people face when trying to leave the family home and establish themselves independently.

He acknowledged that the grant would not solve the wider housing problem, but said it would provide direct assistance to people facing the initial costs of renting.

The council has allocated a specific budget for the grants, with the amount available to individual applicants and the full eligibility conditions detailed in the official application rules.

Young renters who have signed a qualifying tenancy agreement are being encouraged to check the requirements and submit their application before the deadline.
