The Canary Islands will see contrasting weather today, Thursday 22nd October, with improving conditions in the east and a greater chance of rain across the more mountainous western islands.
Temperatures will remain mild, with daytime highs reaching around 25–26°C in several coastal locations. However, anyone planning inland or mountain trips should check conditions carefully, as some showers could be heavy and accompanied by thunder.
Rain alert: where it applies
The Canary Islands Government activated a rain alert from midnight today for El Hierro, La Gomera and eastern La Palma. The rest of the archipelago remains under a rain pre-alert.
The alert is for strong showers and possible thunderstorms. In the areas under alert, rainfall could reach 30 litres per square metre in an hour or 100 litres over 12 hours.
Island-by-island forecast for Thursday 22nd October 2026:
TENERIFE
Tenerife will have a changeable day, with cloud and showers giving way to brighter intervals in some areas. The forecast highlights eastern and northeastern districts during the early hours, while inland areas could see further showers as cloud develops during the afternoon.
Some downpours may be locally strong or thundery. Conditions are expected to become less unsettled later, although anyone travelling inland should allow for sudden changes in visibility and wet roads.
Light easterly winds will turn northeasterly and strengthen during the afternoon as the trade wind returns. Temperatures are forecast to range between 21°C and 25°C, with cooler conditions at higher altitude.
GRAN CANARIA
Cloud will be more extensive initially, with clearer spells developing from around midday. Inland areas may stay cloudier during the afternoon, when an occasional shower remains possible.
The greatest chance of rain is during the early hours and later inland. An isolated heavier or thundery shower cannot be ruled out, so the improving coastal outlook should not be taken as a guarantee of dry conditions across the island.
Winds will start light from the east before becoming moderate and northeasterly later. Temperatures are forecast to range between 22°C and 26°C.
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote should gradually brighten after a cloudier start, with any lingering showers becoming less likely as the afternoon progresses. The overall trend is towards more sunshine and fewer clouds later in the day.
Some light calima may give the sky a hazy appearance. Daytime temperatures will rise, particularly inland, with temperatures forecast to reach 25°C after a minimum of around 21°C.
Winds will initially be light, with local sea breezes, before becoming more noticeably northeasterly towards the evening. The improving afternoon offers a better window for outdoor plans, although local beach flags should still be observed.
FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura will also see improving conditions, with early cloud and possible residual showers giving way to broader sunny spells. High cloud may pass overhead later, alongside some light calima.
Temperatures should recover from yesterday’s cooler conditions, with the increase more noticeable inland. Puerto del Rosario is forecast to range between 20°C and 26°C.
Light winds and coastal breezes will give way to a more established northeasterly wind later.
