Two bus passengers in Lanzarote have been fined €4,000 each for seriously disrupting the island’s interurban bus service. The incidents happened on Line 3, which connects Costa Teguise with Puerto del Carmen, and were classified as very serious breaches of the passenger regulations.
The Cabildo’s transport department announced the sanctions yesterday, Monday, confirming that both passengers also face the temporary withdrawal of their personal travel passes.
The authority has not disclosed when the incidents took place or how long the passes will be withdrawn.
Transport councillor Miguel Ángel Jiménez said passengers and drivers should be able to use the service safely, without disruptive behaviour making journeys uncomfortable or putting others at risk.
He stressed that most people use the buses responsibly, and that enforcement is intended to protect them and the staff keeping services running.
Rules passengers should know
Alongside the sanctions, the Cabildo reminded residents and visitors that the island’s buses have rules covering behaviour, cleanliness and consideration for other passengers.
Smoking and vaping are prohibited, as is eating or drinking anything other than water. Passengers must also avoid distracting the driver while the bus is moving.
Travellers should follow staff instructions, respect seats reserved for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, and avoid damaging or dirtying the vehicles.
The regulations also prohibit boarding in swimwear — something holidaymakers should bear in mind when returning from the beach.
Jiménez said the transport department would continue applying sanctions where behaviour disrupts services or compromises the safety and comfort of other passengers.
