Two Loggerhead Turtles released back into the ocean after making full recovery

Two loggerhead turtles have been returned to the sea after their rehabilitation at the Wildlife Recovery Centre (CRFS) of Tafira, in Gran Canaria. The release took place on Tuesday (Christmas Eve) at Sardina del Norte, a coastal area in the municipality of Gáldar.

Both turtles were rescued after sustaining injuries along the coast. During their stay at the centre, they received medical care and rehabilitation to prepare them for their return to the ocean.

In a groundbreaking effort to enhance conservation research, one of the turtles has been equipped with a special device that records real-time data on temperature and depth. This innovative technology will allow scientists to monitor how it is readapting to the ocean environment.

Furthermore, the data collected will provide valuable insights into oceanographic changes in the Macaronesian region and the North Atlantic, potentially linked to climate change.

Symbolic Release Ceremony

The release event was attended by Raúl García Brink, the Cabildo Councillor for the Environment and Climate; Teodoro Sosa, the Mayor of Gáldar; and Pascual Calabuig, the head veterinarian and director of the CRFS Tafira. The presence of these dignitaries emphasized the significance of the turtles’ release as part of broader conservation efforts.

For those interested in following the journey of the tagged turtle, its movements and collected data can be tracked via a dedicated online platform.

This release marks another milestone in wildlife conservation, highlighting the critical role of rehabilitation centres and technology in protecting endangered marine species.
