A speed camera on the LZ-67 road in Lanzarote has been named the most active in the Canary Islands, racking up more than 25,000 speeding tickets and fines in 2024.

It is located at kilometre 20 on the road between Yaiza and Tinajo near the Montañas del Fuego.

According to figures released by the European Automobile Association (AEA), the same camera issued just under 3,000 fines in 2023, meaning the number increased by more than eight times in just 12 months.

Other cameras across the islands have seen the opposite trend. On Gran Canaria’s southern motorway, the camera at kilometre 42 dropped from over 38,000 fines in 2023 to just 11,400 last year.

The camera on the TF-13 in Tenerife, near the entrance to Santa Cruz from La Laguna, also saw a drop of around 5,000 fines, totalling just under 9,500 in 2024.

Across Spain, the DGT recorded more than 3.4 million speeding offences last year, which is a 4% rise on the previous year. Most of these were on motorways and main roads, even though the majority of serious accidents happen on secondary roads.

Due to this, the AEA president, Mario Arnaldo, believes the DGT needs to rethink its radar strategy. “These cameras aren’t stopping people from speeding or preventing accidents,” he said. “They’re just being used as tools for collecting money.”
