All of the Canary Islands will be under yellow or orange weather alerts in the next few days as a heatwave sweeps across the archipelago. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), thermometers are forecast to climb as high as 37°C in some areas, prompting health and safety warnings for both locals and tourists.

AEMET has issued new yellow and orange alerts for high temperatures, which will first affect Gran Canaria tomorrow, Tuesday, before extending to all the islands on Wednesday.

GRAN CANARIA:

A yellow alert will be in place from 10:00am to 7:00pm on Tuesday, impacting the eastern, southern, and western peaks and slopes of the island. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 35°C, particularly in the Tejeda basin and the south- and west-facing midlands.

FUERTEVENTURA:

Likewise, a yellow warning has been issued for Fuerteventura during the same hours on Tuesday, primarily affecting inland areas in the southern half of the island where temperatures are also set to climb to 35°C.

Even hotter on Wednesday

Conditions are expected to intensify on Wednesday, with temperatures rising further in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. As a result, orange warnings will be in effect on all three islands from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Maximum temperatures could reach 37°C, again particularly in the Tejeda basin and on the south- and west-facing slopes of Gran Canaria, as well as inland areas in the southern halves of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Meanwhile, the remaining islands, including Tenerife, will be under yellow alerts from 9:00am to 9:00pm, with highs of around 35°C anticipated.

Advice for residents and visitors

Authorities are urging residents and tourists to take precautions against the heat by staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, and paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.

Anyone planning to hike or spend extended periods outdoors is advised to reconsider their plans or to take extra care.
