A fire broke out in the early hours of this morning (Monday) in the Callao Sport hotel occupied by squatters in Callao Salvaje, in the municipality of Adeje (south Tenerife), leaving one man critically injured and another seriously hurt.

According to the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), the blaze occurred at around 3:38am at the hotel situated on Avenida El Jable. They confirmed that the victims, a 56-year-old man and another male whose age has not been confirmed, suffered burns and smoke inhalation and were taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment.

A 30-year-old woman was treated for moderate smoke inhalation and also taken to the same medical facility. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the blaze.

The hotel, which has been occupied for several months, is thought to house around 300 people living there illegally. Despite repeated appeals from the property owner, authorities have not yet found a solution to the situation, raising concerns over safety and welfare conditions in the building.

Further updates are expected as officials continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
