The Local Police have intensified inspections aimed at identifying “illegal transport services” operating at Tenerife South Airport, such as people offering private taxi services.
This includes unlicensed vehicle rentals between private individuals, improper use of campervans, and other unauthorised activities that undermine the taxi industry and regulated transport operators.
In a statement issued yesterday, Tuesday, Granadilla de Abona Town Hall confirmed that actions are being taken to combat irregular transport at Tenerife South Airport through increased monitoring and traffic safety measures.
The Town Hall stressed that it will continue with these operations and will collaborate, within its remit, with the relevant authorities to ensure the airport environment remains “safe, orderly and respectful” towards legitimate transport companies and professionals.
The Councillor for Security, Candelaria Rodríguez, highlighted that Tenerife South Airport handles between 30,000 and 40,000 passengers a day, rising to as many as 60,000 during peak season. This makes it a strategic hub where transport services from across the island converge.
“Irregular practices confuse tourists, damage the destination’s image, and offer a poor-quality service that does not reflect the standards expected of a first-class international airport,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Mobility, René Oval, stressed the importance of these efforts to protect the taxi sector and to uphold fair competition against those who break the law.
“We are acting within our powers to regulate transport, enhance the experience of those who visit us, and defend the taxi sector along with all professionals who operate legally,” Oval explained.
Transport-related offences can result in fines exceeding €4,000, with reports being passed on to the Department of Transport at the Tenerife Cabildo, which holds overall responsibility in this area.
Additionally, the Local Police regularly conduct speed checks — with a limit of 40 km/h around the airport — and ensure that VTC vehicles (private hire cars) only enter the airport premises if they have a pre-booked reservation, in line with current regulations.
