Toddler dies after suffering heatstroke in Fuerteventura

A 20-month-old child has died after suffering heatstroke in Fuerteventura, in a tragic incident that happened on the island on Saturday.

The toddler was taken to Fuerteventura General Hospital in a critical condition before being airlifted to the Maternal and Children's Hospital in Gran Canaria for specialist treatment. Despite the efforts of medical teams, the child sadly died.

No further details about the circumstances leading to the heatstroke have been released.

The tragedy comes as the Canary Islands continue to experience high summer temperatures, with health authorities regularly reminding residents and visitors to take extra precautions during periods of extreme heat. Young children are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and should never be left in hot environments, including parked vehicles, even for a short time.

Officials advise keeping children well hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, and seeking immediate medical help if signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke appear.
