Canary Islands airports prepare for 11th November general strike

Passengers flying to and from the Canary Islands next Wednesday, 11th November, are being advised to check for updates as a nationwide general strike is taking place across Spain, including here in the Canary Islands.

The government has now confirmed minimum staffing levels for private security services during the strike, meaning that 90% of private security personnel must remain on duty at ports and airports.

What does this mean for flights and ferries?

The 90% requirement applies specifically to private security staff. It does NOT mean that 90% of flights, ferries or other transport services will operate as normal.

Separate rules may apply to other groups of workers governed by trade unions, and the effect on services will depend on those arrangements and how many employees take part in the strike.

As of the latest information available, the impact on individual flights and airlines has not been confirmed. Passengers should check directly with their airline or travel company before travelling and allow extra time to reach the airport.

Why is the strike taking place?

Unions have called the strike to demand improvements in pay and working conditions, alongside action on the rising cost of housing.

In the Canary Islands, access to affordable homes has become a major concern for residents, with rental prices putting increasing pressure on household budgets.

The strike is scheduled to run throughout Wednesday 11th November. Other services, including schools and public transport, may also be affected depending on staff participation and the minimum services established for each sector.
