Storm knocks out power to 160,000 homes and triggers 50 emergency call-outs in Tenerife

A storm cut electricity to around 160,000 homes across Tenerife earlier this Sunday morning, as emergency crews responded to nearly 50 weather-related incidents.

The power failure began at about 8.25am after two high-voltage lines in the south off the island disconnected and caused problems at the Granadilla power station. Fortunately, Red Eléctrica acted quickly and restored the supply within half an hour.

The outage was one of the most serious disruptions during a morning of heavy rain. Emergency call-outs included rockfalls, drainage problems, flooding and work to pump water from affected areas.

El Médano was among the worst-hit locations. Rainfall reached 26 millimetres in an hour near the resort and Tenerife South Airport, flooding streets close to the beach.

In Santa Cruz, a large fallen branch forced a road closure at the junction of Rambla de Santa Cruz and Calle Numancia while crews cleared the area. Rockfalls were also reported in El Tablero and María Jiménez, where stones struck a parked car. Further debris was reported on the TF-12 through Anaga.

The storm brought heavy rain to Tenerife from the early hours of Sunday. Emergency teams remained on alert as conditions developed.

Residents and visitors should check official updates before travelling, take care on wet or debris-covered roads and never drive through floodwater. Call 112 in an emergency.
