No disturbances reported in Las Americas or Santa Cruz following calls for violence

Two of Tenerife’s busiest shopping areas remained calm yesterday, Saturday, despite fears of possible looting and disorder following messages circulated on social media.

Calle del Castillo in Santa Cruz and the Golden Mile in Playa de Las Américas had been named in anonymous calls for gatherings. However, no significant disturbances were reported in either area.

Police maintained a visible presence while residents and visitors continued to walk through the shopping streets. Some businesses had closed or protected their premises as a precaution.

In Las Americas, around a dozen Local and National Police officers were stationed at either end of the Golden Mile in case of any disturbance, with riot police on standby if needed.

In Santa Cruz, National Police and the Local Police’s Unipol unit were deployed around the city centre. The council had coordinated with the Government Delegation and police to prepare for possible incidents.

The concerns followed online messages linked to the name “Blocus”, some of which encouraged vandalism and attacks on shops and police. Authorities had stepped up security after disturbances in Barcelona and Bilbao earlier in the week.

Two arrests on Friday

The Guardia Civil announced on Friday that two people had been arrested in Tenerife, including a 16-year-old, over their alleged involvement in promoting disorder.

The pair are being investigated over a suspected public disorder offence. Their arrests came before the gatherings advertised for Saturday.
