Residents in Gran Tarajal and Tarajalejo are facing an ongoing mosquito problem, with repeated bites causing frustration in the two Fuerteventura coastal towns.
The insects have been troubling the area for months, and some people in Tarajalejo have previously needed medical attention after suffering severe reactions to bites.
Tuineje Council and health officials first took action in July, when specialists visited Tarajalejo to collect samples, install traps and investigate where the mosquitoes were breeding. Pest-control treatment was also carried out.
However, residents continued to report problems in the following months, with concerns spreading to nearby Gran Tarajal.
In September, opposition councillors called for further action, asking the council to explain what had been done and what measures were in place to prevent the mosquitoes from returning.
The latest report says the mosquito affecting the two towns has been identified and does not pose a danger to health.
Health officials have separately monitored tiger mosquitoes elsewhere in the municipality. That does not establish that they are responsible for the bites reported in Gran Tarajal and Tarajalejo.
Residents and visitors can help reduce mosquito breeding by emptying standing water from plant pots, buckets and other outdoor containers. Repellent and clothing that covers exposed skin can also help prevent bites.
Anyone experiencing a severe reaction or worrying symptoms after a bite should seek medical advice.
