AEMET has extended its heat warnings across the Canary Islands until Wednesday (5th August), with orange alerts remaining in force for parts of Gran Canaria and La Palma as the current heatwave continues. Forecasters say the warnings could be extended further, as AEMET only issues official weather alerts up to 48 hours in advance.

Temperatures of up to 39°C are expected in parts of Gran Canaria, while some areas could locally exceed 40°C. Several islands are also under yellow weather warnings for strong wind, with gusts of up to 80km/h.

Tenerife
Following Monday's orange warning, yellow heat alerts remain in place for Tuesday and Wednesday between 11:00am and 8:00pm.

Temperatures are expected to reach 35°C across the east, south, west and the Santa Cruz metropolitan area, with 37°C possible in parts of southern Tenerife.

A yellow wind warning will also be active on Wednesday, with gusts of up to 70km/h affecting south-east and western areas.

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria remains under an orange heat warning today, Tuesday, from 11:00am to 8:00pm, covering the summit areas and much of the east, south and west of the island.

Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 39°C, with parts of the south-east potentially exceeding 40°C. The warning may also affect north-western areas.

The orange warning continues on Wednesday, although maximum temperatures are expected to ease slightly to around 37°C, particularly across the south, west and south-east mid-altitude areas.

A yellow wind warning is also in force throughout Wednesday, with gusts of up to 70km/h expected on the south-east and west-facing slopes.

Lanzarote
Lanzarote remains under a yellow heat warning on Tuesday between 11:00am and 8:00pm, with temperatures of around 34°C expected across inland areas and the south-east coast.

Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is also under a yellow heat warning on Tuesday, with highs of 34°C widely expected and local temperatures of up to 37°C possible inland and along the south-east coast.

La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro
The three smaller islands are all under yellow warnings for both heat and strong winds.

Temperatures could reach 35°C on south-facing slopes, while wind gusts of up to 80km/h are forecast for higher ground and south-east and western parts of the island.

Both warnings remain in force on Wednesday.

Fire Risk Remains High

The prolonged spell of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds continues to increase the risk of wildfires across the Canary Islands. Residents and visitors are advised to:

• Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
• Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
• Never light barbecues or fires in forest or rural areas where restrictions apply.
• Follow updates from AEMET and local authorities, as weather warnings may change at short notice.

With the heatwave expected to continue through at least midweek, officials are urging everyone to take sensible precautions, particularly older people, young children and those with existing health conditions.
