Teenager arrested after man stabbed in face in Gran Canaria

A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital after being stabbed in the face during an alleged attack in South Gran Canaria in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday). The National Police later arrested a 19-year-old suspect.

The incident happened just before 2.30am on Calle Archipiélago Canario in El Salobre, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, following a fight involving at least two people.

The injured man approached a woman nearby, pointed to his wound and asked her to call emergency services, saying: “Help, I’ve been stabbed.”

She immediately raised the alarm, but he left on a scooter before police and ambulance crews arrived.

After the woman explained which way he had gone, the local police found him on Avenida del Barranco in the El Tablero area, with a deep cut to his face.

National Police officers and a Canary Islands emergency ambulance crew also attended. Paramedics treated him before taking him to Hospital Insular in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His injuries were not initially thought to be life-threatening.

Officers from the Maspalomas National Police took charge of the investigation and began efforts to identify and find the alleged attacker.

Hours later, the 19-year-old suspect, who reportedly has no previous criminal record, attended the police station to give a statement.

According to reports, he denied involvement and claimed the injured man had inflicted the wound himself; however, the injury was considered incompatible with that account, and officers arrested him on suspicion of assault.

The investigation remains open to establish what caused the fight and whether anyone else was involved.
