The Tenerife Cabildo has approved a €30 million investment to rehabilitate a 25 kilometre stretch of the TF-1 highway, which runs through the municipalities of Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar. This section of the motorway is heavily trafficked, with over 50,000 vehicles passing through daily, according to Tenerife’s Island President, Rosa Dávila.
Although the initial approved budget is €30 million, the project’s total cost, according to contract documents, rises to €35.9 million. The rehabilitation work will be divided into four phases, and awarded to four different companies. The first phase has a budget of €2.7 million, with the remaining €33.2 million allocated for the subsequent phases. The works include resurfacing, installing noise barriers along the side of the road, repainting, and adding concrete barriers and guardrails on bridges.
The companies tasked with the work have been given timelines ranging from six to nine months to complete their phase, depending on the volume of work. The goal is for the rehabilitation to begin by the end of this year or early January 2025.
In addition to the highway project, the Cabildo has approved other investments. This includes a €266,500 project to improve the Güímar Industrial Park, focusing on roads, pavements, and green areas, with a four-month completion deadline.
Also, €641,600 has been allocated for the renovation of storage and processing facilities in Benijos, La Orotava. The contractor, Simeon GH SL, has committed to using eco-friendly vehicles and providing 300 hours of training for its employees.
The island government has also approved €10,000 in funding for Radio Ecca to implement a "Roma mediator" program, aimed at fostering social inclusion within the Roma community, particularly women.
The social services are receiving an additional €1.18 million to support various social projects, which include the renovation of a social dining facility, the construction of a new Red Cross headquarters, and improvements to elderly care centres, with a focus on promoting healthy nutrition for senior citizens.
The government has also approved €4 million to increase the capacity of residential care facilities for minors, increasing available spaces by 17 and establishing two new specialised centres for adolescents.
On the cultural front, €4.18 million will be invested in the rehabilitation of Teatro Guimerá, with funding contributions from both the island and Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s local government.
Additionally, €3.8 million has been earmarked for language scholarships, benefitting 340 high school students to study abroad in countries like Canada, Ireland, the U.S., and France between 2025 and 2027. This forms part of a broader initiative to improve the quality of life for families across the island.
