Spain lifts all entry requirements for travellers from EU countries

The Spanish Ministry of Health has removed all entry restrictions for travellers visiting Spain from any of the EU and Schengen Area countries, including the requirement to present proof of vacation against Covid-19, recovery from the virus, or a negative test result, which is good news for people from Ireland.

According to the Ministry of Health, the move was based on a report of the EU Commission, approved by the EU Parliament, the EU Council, and the European Economic and Social Committee.

The report named “COVID-19: Supporting the EU’s preparedness and response with a view to the future”, was published at the end of April and supports abolishing restrictions on free movement once the situation permits for such a move to be taken.

Citing this report, the Ministry highlights that the majority of Member States have already removed entry restrictions for travellers from the rest of the EU and Schengen countries, including the obligation to present proof of vaccination, recovery, or test results.

“In Spain, due to the high rates of vaccination, above the EU average, and the favourable situation of the health system, it is considered to be the appropriate time to eliminate travel restrictions for people from countries belonging to the European Union,” explains the decision published in the BOE.

Spain was one of the last EU/Schengen members to keep entry rules for fellow EU nationals in place. The majority of the Member States have also removed entry restrictions for travellers from third countries, including the UK, as well, but they remain in place for Spain which includes the Canary Islands.

The Spanish Ministry of Health have confirmed that restrictions on travellers from outside the EU and Schengen have not changed.

Only ten days ago, on May 21st, Spain lifted the entry ban on non-vaccinated travellers from third countries, finally permitting them to enter the country with negative PCR or Antigen test results.
