A shift towards unsettled weather is expected across the Canary Islands this week, as an isolated high-level depression, known as a DANA, moves closer to the archipelago.

According to the latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the islands will see increasing cloud cover, a drop in temperatures and strengthening winds as the week progresses.

Cloud and light showers early in the week

Although the week began with largely clear skies, conditions are set to change from Monday afternoon and Tuesday. Cloud will build from midday onwards, particularly across the north and east of the larger islands, where light and scattered showers are expected.

While rainfall at the start of the week is expected to be patchy and generally weak, forecasters say it will gradually become more unstable.

Thursday set to bring the biggest change

The most noticeable shift is forecast for Thursday (14th May), when the DANA’s position combined with cooler, more unstable trade winds is expected to bring overcast skies to the northern areas of the mountainous islands.

AEMET predicts light, scattered and occasional rain in these regions, although showers could extend to other slopes depending on how the system develops. Temperatures are also set to dip slightly below the typical mid-May average.

Strong winds in higher areas

Wind will be one of the most significant features of this upcoming weather episode.

Strong south-westerly winds are expected across the central peaks of Tenerife, with locally strong gusts and the possibility of very strong gusts at times.

From Wednesday into Thursday, winds will turn northerly to north-easterly and strengthen further, particularly along eastern and north-western slopes of the higher islands. This pattern of cooler trade winds is expected to dominate the latter part of the week, bringing a noticeably fresher and more humid feel, especially in mid-altitude areas.

For residents and visitors alike, it will be a week to keep an eye on forecasts — and perhaps keep a jacket handy.
