Lanzarote Cabildo has formally called on the Spanish Government and airport operator AENA to introduce a 75% discount on parking charges at Lanzarote Airport for residents of the island.
The proposal was approved during yesterday’s (Thursday) island council meeting and aims to bring airport parking costs in line with the 75% resident travel discount already available on flights and ferries between the islands and mainland Spain.
Airport Travel Is a Necessity for Many Residents
The proposal argues that for residents of non-capital islands such as Lanzarote, travelling through the airport is often a necessity rather than a leisure activity.
Vice-President of the Cabildo, María Jesús Tovar, said many islanders rely on air travel to attend specialist medical appointments, sit university exams, meet work commitments or complete essential administrative procedures on other islands.
"For many residents, going to the airport is not the start of a holiday but an essential part of everyday life," she said.
High Costs for Airport Workers
The council also highlighted the impact of parking charges on people employed at the airport.
Coalición Canaria spokesperson Samuel Martín said many workers are facing what he described as "excessive costs" simply to park at their place of work each day.
The Island Council believes introducing the same 75% discount already granted on transport fares would help ease the financial burden on both residents and airport employees.
The proposal will now be submitted to the Spanish Government and AENA for consideration. At present, no such parking discount is available for Canary Islands residents.
