Where is it forecast to rain in the Canary Islands this Monday?

Parts of the Canary Islands are forecast to see some rain today, Monday 17th August, although conditions will clear as the day progresses with sunshine returning to much of the Archipelago.

According to the latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the new week will begin with a mixture of cloudy spells and some light, scattered showers on several islands.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged in coastal areas, with slight falls possible inland, while highs will reach around 30°C.

Where could it rain today?

During the morning, light and occasional rain cannot be ruled out across northern mid-altitude areas of the higher islands. This includes parts of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

The showers are expected to be generally light and scattered rather than prolonged periods of heavy rain.

Conditions should improve during the afternoon as the cloud begins to break, leaving mostly clear or sunny skies across large parts of the islands.

Cloudy start in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will also begin Monday with periods of cloud before conditions improve from around midday.

There is also a possibility of some very light and isolated drizzle in the north of Lanzarote during the morning.

The afternoon should then become considerably brighter, with mostly clear skies expected across both eastern islands.

Tenerife will see the highest temperatures

Despite the possibility of morning rain, temperatures will remain warm.

Tenerife is forecast to range between 23°C and 30°C, making it one of the warmest islands today. Gran Canaria will see temperatures between 23°C and 28°C, while Lanzarote is forecast to reach 29°C and Fuerteventura 27°C.

What about the wind?

Light to moderate northerly and north-easterly winds are forecast across most of the Canary Islands. Winds could become stronger at times around the northwest and southeast sides of the more mountainous islands.

In the central highlands of Tenerife, including the higher areas around Teide, winds will come from the west.

Sea breezes are expected to dominate along south-facing coasts.

Sea conditions around the Canary Islands

For anyone heading to the beach or out on the water, AEMET forecasts north-easterly winds of force 3 to 4 around the islands.

Generally moderate seas are expected, together with a northerly swell producing waves of between one and two metres.

Overall, Monday will bring a somewhat cloudy and potentially damp start to the week in parts of the Canary Islands, particularly across northern areas, before brighter and sunnier conditions develop during the afternoon.
