Nine people have been remanded in custody after around 400 kilos of hashish were seized during a suspected drug landing on the south coast of Gran Canaria.

Eleven people are under investigation following the operation at Castillo del Romeral, with the other two released pending further proceedings. The drugs had allegedly been transported to the island aboard a speedboat.

The joint operation involved the National Police, the Guardia Civil and Customs Surveillance officers. Investigators had reportedly been monitoring the suspected criminal organisation for some time.

The investigation began in early July after authorities received information suggesting the Castillo del Romeral coastline was being used as an entry point for illegal drugs.

Police believe drugs brought ashore in the area were intended either for distribution across the Canary Islands or onward transportation to mainland Spain.

Officers later learned that the group was allegedly preparing another landing during the week beginning 10th August and launched a surveillance operation around the fishing harbour.

During the night of 11th August, officers noticed unusual activity near the harbour, including several vehicles and people suspected of being involved in receiving the shipment.

At around midnight, a boat arrived at the coast, and several people allegedly began unloading packages and placing them inside a waiting vehicle. Officers then moved in to secure the area and arrest those involved.

Around 400 kilos of hashish were recovered before the shipment could be distributed.

Gunshots were also heard during the police operation. According to the authorities, members of the suspected organisation fired several shots, prompting officers to respond with warning shots while identifying themselves as police.

Some of them surrendered, while others attempted to escape. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to prevent the Castillo del Romeral coastline from being used as a landing point for drug trafficking operations.
