A 16-year-old boy has suffered a broken arm and multiple injuries after allegedly being attacked by a group of five young people in Vecindario, Gran Canaria, on Saturday night.
The teenager was walking home after watching his teammates play football when he reportedly came across the group vandalising a parked car using a stop sign and glass bottles.
The incident happened at approximately 11.30pm on Calle La Centrífuga, in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
The boy, who plays for UD Vecindario, had attended the match as a spectator because he was unable to play due to an injury.
His coach said he had offered to drive him home after the match, but the teenager declined, saying he was happy to walk.
Attacked while walking home
According to the account given, the teenager was on a video call with his girlfriend when he encountered five young people, reportedly aged between 16 and 19, damaging a parked vehicle.
The group were allegedly hitting the car with a stop sign and using glass bottles to smash its windows.
Although the boy continued walking without intervening, the group reportedly began shouting insults and mocking him before confronting him.
He was then allegedly punched repeatedly, knocked to the ground and kicked while lying on the pavement.
The attack left him with a fractured right forearm, along with bruising, cuts and grazes to his ribs, knee and the right side of his body.
The teenager eventually managed to get back to his feet and run home.
His coach said the boy's physical fitness had helped him escape, adding that the attackers had allegedly threatened him with broken glass bottles.
The teenager's girlfriend reportedly witnessed part of the incident through their video call.
During the attack and escape, the boy also reported that his mobile phone had been stolen. It was later found nearby by his sister, badly damaged.
Concerns about safety in the area
The incident has caused concern among the teenager's football teammates and their families.
His coach said the team had been left shaken by what happened.
"We are devastated. I'm a father too, and all I can think is that it could have happened to my son," he said.
He also raised concerns about safety in parts of Vecindario, particularly late at night.
"All the boys are frightened. We believe there isn't enough security in the area, especially at certain times of night," he added.
The coach claimed that vandalism and theft from vehicles had become a problem in some areas, revealing that his own car had previously been broken into, with its windows smashed and valuables stolen.
Guardia Civil investigation
The teenager has since been discharged from hospital and has filed a formal complaint with the Guardia Civil in Vecindario.
Officers have opened an investigation to identify those responsible for the alleged assault.
No arrests have been confirmed.
