Police have confirmed the identity of a mummified body discovered earlier this week in a remote ravine on the island of La Palma. The remains were found on Monday by a hunter walking through the Barranco de Los Pajaritos, a hard-to-reach area of the island.

Authorities have now confirmed that the body belongs to a woman who lived locally. The National Police are currently awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators have ruled out an initial hypothesis that the remains could belong to Natalia Hernández Martínez, a woman who disappeared more than three years ago after arriving at La Palma Airport.

Discovered by a hunter

The discovery was made when the hunter, who was walking along the ravine bed, came across the body and immediately alerted the emergency services. National Police officers attended the scene, secured the area and confirmed that the body was in an advanced state of mummification, suggesting it had been exposed in the ravine for a long period of time.

Following the find, a specialist Homicide Unit from Tenerife travelled to La Palma to assist with the investigation. Their work has focused on formally identifying the deceased, establishing how long the body may have been in the ravine and clarifying the circumstances surrounding her death.

At this stage, police have not released further details and are awaiting the autopsy results before drawing any conclusions.
