Despite minimum services and, until now, Lanzarote being the airport with the most incidents, Eurocontrol has warned of impending “moderate to high delays in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura due to the air traffic controllers' strike."
Air traffic controllers at the control towers operated by Saerco have been on strike for several months because, as they have published on social media, their private employer refuses to negotiate a new collective agreement for wages and working conditions.
The state employs staff at the other control towers in the Canary Islands, so this trike does not apply to them.
The truth is that this strike has not had a major impact on travellers so far, because among other things, controllers claim, the Ministry has set "abusive minimum services" that prevent them from exercising their effective right to strike.
However, due to this, the striking has increased and delays were seen on Saturday, particularly at Fuerteventura airport, as they strive to get their point across and voices heard.
So far, there have only been delays and no cancellations, but that could change as we head towards the busy Christmas period.
