The Canary Islands closed December with an annual Consumer Price Index (inflation) of 2.8%, marginally under the national figure of 2.9%, according to data published on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Across Spain, the CPI eased by one-tenth of a percentage point in December to 2.9% year-on-year, driven largely by lower fuel prices and a smaller rise in the cost of package holidays.
In the Canary Islands, inflation rose by 0.7% compared to the previous month, bringing the final annual rate for 2023 to 2.8%.
Housing recorded the highest price increases in the region, rising by 3.9% over the year. Food and non-alcoholic beverages also saw notable inflation, up 2.6%. Household goods increased by 0.7%, while alcoholic drinks and tobacco rose by 2.2%.
By province, Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura) experienced a 3.1% rise in prices, while Tenerife and the western islands (La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro) registered a lower 2.5% increase.
