A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after allegedly barricading himself inside a property with his young son while under the influence of drugs, prompting a high-risk police operation.
The incident took place in the early hours of 7th April, when the man is said to have been behaving aggressively after taking substances since the previous day. According to the National Police, his actions led to threats and violent behaviour within the family home.
The situation escalated when his former partner arrived at the property to collect the child, concerned that he was not in a fit state to care for him. The man reportedly reacted in a hostile manner, leading to an emergency call to the police.
Officers arrived to find a dangerous scene, with the suspect armed with a speargun and large knives. He allegedly threatened one of the officers during the confrontation.
The Police quickly secured the safety of the child, the woman and another family member inside the home, preventing further harm. However, the man refused to surrender and instead barricaded himself inside the property.
He later moved onto the roof of the building, where he threatened to jump if officers did not leave. During the standoff, he caused damage to the building and threw pieces of concrete at police maintaining a safety perimeter.
Specialist negotiators were brought in as part of standard police protocol in high-risk situations, working to calm the situation and avoid injuries.
The operation ended when officers intercepted the man as he attempted to leave the building via an alternative exit. He was arrested without any reported injuries.
He has been charged with alleged domestic violence offences and assaulting police officers. Following a court appearance, a judge ordered that he be held in custody while the investigation continues.
