A primary school in Arrecife has been damaged in a suspected arson and vandalism attack, leaving one classroom destroyed and several others affected.

The incident took place at CEIP Los Geranios in the Altavista area, where cleaning staff alerted emergency services just before 7.30am today (Tuesday) after finding parts of the school had been vandalised.

By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already gone out, but the classroom used by infant pupils had been completely burnt. Tables, chairs and other equipment were destroyed.

Smoke from the fire spread into nearby classrooms, meaning several groups of pupils had to be moved to different areas of the school when they arrived.

Elsewhere in the building, walls, blackboards and furniture had been sprayed with paint. The dining hall was also damaged, with food thrown around and facilities left in a mess.

Arrecife’s councillor for education, Abigail González, visited the school shortly after the incident. She confirmed that police are now examining the damage to identify those responsible.

Investigators believe a group may be behind the attack, although enquiries by the National Police are ongoing.

The incident has caused disruption for pupils and staff, with classes continuing in alternative rooms while the damage is assessed and repairs begin.
