Three people have now died following a fire at a residential building in Los Realejos, Tenerife, after two of those initially hospitalised in critical condition later passed away. The emergency services have confirmed that all three victims died as a result of smoke inhalation.
The blaze broke out at around 3:30am on Saturday in a three-storey building on Calle Los Bancales. A 60-year-old woman died at the scene, while seven others were affected by heavy smoke.
Of those taken to hospital, three were in critical condition. Health authorities from the Canary Islands Government later confirmed that two of them - a 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman - have since died at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria.
A third patient, a 60-year-old woman, remains in critical condition at the Hospital Universitario de Canarias.
More than 30 residents were evacuated from the building, with several found in stairwells and internal courtyards suffering from smoke inhalation.
Emergency responders reported that the three critically injured victims had gone into cardiac arrest due to smoke inhalation. They were resuscitated at the scene by teams from the Canary Islands Emergency Service before being transported to hospital.
Firefighters from the Tenerife Fire Consortium deployed four units to tackle the blaze. The fire is believed to have started on the first floor before spreading up the exterior façade, affecting neighbouring properties and upper levels of the building.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
