Canary Police now equipped with Taser guns to reduce the use of force in high-risk situations
The Canary Islands Government has confirmed that the regional police force will be equipped with tasers as part of a move to strengthen operational capability and reduce the amount of force during interventions.
According to an official statement, the Directorate-General for Security, has already supplied a dozen of the electric devices to the Policía Canaria.
This forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the force, aimed at providing officers with tools that are both effective and proportionate, in line with principles of legality and minimal use of force.
Officials say the introduction of tasers is intended to reduce reliance on more harmful force, while increasing protection for both officers and the public in high-risk situations.
Training and regulation
The government also stressed that the deployment will be accompanied by specialist training for officers, alongside clear operational protocols to ensure the devices are used correctly and in accordance with current laws.
Authorities maintain that the measure strikes a balance between enhancing police capability and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
