A small earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded off the west coast of Fuerteventura last night (Sunday) and was felt by some residents on the island.

According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, the tremor occurred at 10:35pm around 15 kilometres west of Ajuy, a coastal village in the municipality of Pájara.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of approximately four kilometres below the seabed. Its epicentre was located west of the island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Although the tremor was noticeable to some people, there have been no reports of damage or injuries, and no disruption to services has been reported.

Small earthquakes are relatively common in and around the Canary Islands due to the volcanic nature of the archipelago. Most are minor and pass without causing any significant impact.

Residents and visitors do not need to take any action, but authorities continue to monitor seismic activity across the islands as part of routine surveillance.
