Weather alert level is lowered across the Canary Islands

The maximum alert in the Canary Islands, due to the presence of tropical storm 'Hermine', which has now been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, has been deactivated as the effects of it are now declining as it heads away from the archipelago after "historic" rainfall in the parts of islands, and schools will be open again tomorrow (Tuesday).

Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria still have active weather warnings, while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are on pre-alert, should the situation change.

The passage of the tail of the storm continues through the Canary Islands, and during last night there were over 200 incidents related to rain, especially on the island of Gran Canaria and to a lesser extent, on La Palma and Tenerife, according to the Emergency Services.

In total, over 1,400 incidents were attended to this weekend with landslides causing road closures, floods, overflowing sewers and drains, and power cuts across the islands, some of which still have been resolved.
