The Canary Islands received 16 million international tourists in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%, according to figures published on Monday by Turespaña. In December alone, the archipelago welcomed 1.5 million foreign visitors, marking a modest monthly rise of 0.8%.

Across Spain, international arrivals totalled 111.7 million passengers in 2025, up 5.9% on the previous year, which equates to an additional 6.2 million visitors. Europe accounted for 85.4% of all arrivals, with a 5.1% increase. Arrivals from the Americas represented 8.8% of the total (+5.4%), while Asia contributed 2.7% with a sharp year-on-year increase of 18.6%.

Countries in the Gulf region, including the UAE and Qatar, stood out for their strong growth. Arrivals from Asia were boosted by China and the reinstated Japan route from late 2024. Colombia led among Latin American markets with more than one million arrivals.

In December, Spain received 7.7 million international air passengers, an increase of 6.8% compared to December 2024. All major source markets registered growth, with Ireland, Poland and the United States posting double-digit increases.

Key source markets

The United Kingdom remained Spain’s largest source of international passengers in 2025. In December, it accounted for around 1.5 million arrivals, representing 18.8% of Spain’s total and showing 4.7% annual growth.

The Canary Islands were the favourite destination for British tourists, followed by the Valencian Community and Andalusia. Over the year as a whole, the Canaries and Balearics captured the highest shares of UK arrivals (27% and 18.3% respectively).

Germany generated 0.9 million arrivals in December (11.9% of the total), with a slight year-on-year increase of 1%. Although the Canary Islands remained Germany’s leading destination, attracting 34.9% of its passengers, the islands saw a moderate decline of around 13,000 travellers. In 2025, Germany accounted for 13.3% of Spain’s international flow (+1.9%), with Balearics, Canaries and Catalonia as the top destinations, all posting growth.

Italy provided 10.9% of December’s international arrivals (841,816 passengers), recording an 8.5% rise. Madrid and Catalonia together received 59% of Italian visitors. Over 2025, Italy was Spain’s third-largest market, sending 11.3 million passengers (+9.1%).

France accounted for 7.2% of December arrivals, with a 2.4% increase. Madrid (31.2%) and Catalonia (27.4%) were its top destinations. In 2025, France contributed 7.3% of total international arrivals (+3.1%), with the strongest growth seen in Balearics and the Valencian Community.

Passengers from the Netherlands represented 4.6% of December arrivals and grew by 5.6%. The Valencian Community was their main destination, up 11.5%. In 2025, Valencia, Catalonia and Andalusia all exceeded one million arrivals from the Dutch market.
