The Canary Islands are set for a hot and hazy start to the week as temperatures are expected to rise and a light haze, known as "calima," returns to the archipelago, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecast for today, Monday.
The day will begin with some cloudy intervals in the northern areas of the islands, but by this afternoon, the skies are expected to clear, with the appearance of medium and high clouds. The calima will primarily affect mid-altitude and higher regions, leading to slightly reduced visibility.
Temperatures along the coasts will remain relatively stable, but in mid-altitude and higher areas, a moderate rise is expected. In Gran Canaria, temperatures could exceed 34°C in the south and west, while in Tenerife and the western islands, there will be highs of 30°C to 32°C.
Winds will blow moderately from the northeast, with stronger gusts expected in the southeastern and northwestern extremes of the mountainous islands, particularly this morning. In the high peaks, winds will be gentler and from the south. In coastal areas, especially the southeastern and northwestern coasts, northeast winds will reach force 5 or 6, potentially escalating to force 7 offshore, leading to rough seas with waves between one and two metres high.
