Costa Teguise installs first ‘intelligent’ pedestrian crossings to enhance road safety

Teguise Town Hall has announced the installation of Lanzarote’s first “intelligent” zebra crossing system in one of the busiest areas of Costa Teguise.

The innovative crossing is fitted with sensors and LED signals that activate automatically when they detect the presence of pedestrians. This technology significantly increases visibility and safety, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions.

The Mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, described the project as “a step towards a safer, more accessible and innovative town”, underlining the council’s ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure for the benefit of both residents and visitors.

Local Police and Traffic Councillor, Ginés González, highlighted their commitment to road safety and the adoption of technological solutions that prioritise the protection of lives. Meanwhile, Roads and Works Councillor, Eugenio Robayna, emphasised that this is just the start of a broader plan, with further improvements set to be introduced progressively across the municipality.

The Teguise Council are already assessing other strategic locations where additional “intelligent” crossings could be installed, aiming to make the streets of the municipality increasingly safe and user-friendly.
