SCORCHING SUNDAY: Temperatures to reach up to 37°C in Tenerife and Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are set for a sweltering Sunday, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 37°C in parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The hottest conditions are likely in the Tejeda basin and the southern mid-altitude areas of Gran Canaria, as well as similar elevations in southern Tenerife. Elsewhere, many inland areas across the islands will see temperatures exceeding 30°C.

AEMET has extended its heat alerts for the Canary Islands and also issued warnings for strong winds. Locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out in exposed areas, particularly overnight, as the trade winds pick up strength.

Forecast highlights:

GRAN CANARIA:
Mostly clear skies, with some cloud in the north at the start and end of the day. Maximum temperatures could hit 37°C in the southern mid-altitudes, 34°C in the Tejeda basin, and 30–32°C across much of the interior. Northerly winds will strengthen by night, with strong intervals in the southeast and northwest where very strong gusts are possible.

TENERIFE:
Clear or slightly cloudy, except for some cloud in northern lowlands early and late. Temperatures rising slightly, with 32°C expected across large inland areas, up to 34°C in the southern mid-altitudes. Northerly winds will strengthen in the evening, with possible very strong gusts in northwest Tenerife and southern Anaga.

LANZAROTE & FUERTEVENTURA:
Mainly clear with some haze (calima), especially affecting Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Temperatures may reach 30°C across broad inland areas and up to 32°C locally in Lanzarote’s southeast. In Fuerteventura, up to 34°C is expected in the southern interior. Winds from the northwest will pick up in the evening, with the possibility of very strong gusts on the western slopes, inland areas and Jandía.

Sea conditions

Moderate to strong north or northeast winds at sea, with seas rough (marejada or fuerte marejada) especially on east and west coasts, and a northerly swell of 1 to 2 metres. Calmer conditions are expected closer to shore in some northern areas.

Authorities remind both residents and tourists to take precautions against the heat, stay well hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, and pay attention to official warnings, especially regarding wind and sea conditions.
