A British man wanted in connection with eight alleged sexual offences against children in the UK has been arrested in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria.

The man was detained under an international arrest warrant issued by the British judicial authorities. He had previously been arrested in the UK over the allegations and later released on bail.

Police said he subsequently left the country and failed to appear before the courts when required. An international warrant was issued after his whereabouts became unknown.

Investigators received information suggesting that he was staying in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the municipality that includes the tourist resort of Maspalomas.

Officers from the specialist violent crime unit at Maspalomas Police Station confirmed that the warrant remained active and launched a discreet operation to find him.

The suspect was found near a holiday rental property and arrested without incident. He was taken to Maspalomas Police Station for processing.

A court has ordered him to remain in custody while extradition proceedings requested by the UK continue.
