The Yaiza Town Hall has ordered the temporary closure and for bathing to be prohibited at Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) after bacterial contamination was detected in the water.
According to a statement from the local council, Public Health officials identified the presence of intestinal enterococci in a routine water sample taken at the beach.
The council has confirmed that it is investigating the possible source of the contamination, and that new water samples are due to be collected later today (Thursday) to determine when the beach can safely reopen to the public.
In the meantime, both residents and visitors are being advised to use alternative beaches. Recommended options include those within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, better known as the Papagayo beaches, as well as Playa Flamingo and the town’s smaller central beach in Playa Blanca.
Enterococci are bacteria commonly used as indicators of water quality. Elevated levels can signal contamination and may pose a health risk, particularly for young children, older people and those with weakened immune systems.
Officials say updates will be issued once new test results are available.
