A 64-year-old man has been arrested at the port of Agaete, Gran Canaria, on charges of drug trafficking after being found with 1,129 grams of cocaine and more than €30,000 hidden in a secret compartment of his vehicle, during a routine search carried out by the Guardia Civil after disembarking a ferry.
The operation, led by various units from Santa María de Guía and supported by the K-9 department, was conducted at the Port of Agaete in the north of the island.
Officers were inspecting vehicles arriving on ferries from Tenerife as part of a broader initiative to crack down on drug smuggling and illegal trafficking.
During the inspection of the man's vehicle, a police dog detected the presence of drugs inside. After an hour-long search, officers discovered a secret compartment containing four vacuum-sealed packages. Three of these packages contained cash in various denominations, totalling over €30,000, while the fourth held a white powdery substance later confirmed to be cocaine through a drug test.
The packages were reportedly treated with strong-smelling substances in an attempt to evade detection by the K-9 unit, but the strategy failed. The cocaine and cash were immediately seized, and the man, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was arrested.
The case is now being handled by the Investigative Unit of Santa María de Guía, and the suspect has been placed in pre-trial detention by the local court pending further legal proceedings.
