Covid update: Today is two years since the first case was detected in Spain

At 10pm on January 31st 2020, the Ministry of Health announced that the first case of coronavirus had been detected in Spain, a German doctor on holiday in La Gomera who had been in contact with a Chinese colleague before travelling here, whose parents had visited him from Wuhan. Little did we know what lay ahead, especially after Salvador Illa, the Minister of Health at the time, told us there was nothing to worry about as Spain “will only have a few cases”.

Since we wrote that first article about coronavirus 731 days ago, almost 9.8 million people in Spain have had the virus and 93,000 have died, 375 million people worldwide have had it and 5.7 million have lost their lives. Who knew what the next two years held, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and financially.

As we write about it today, 625 cases have been reported in the Canary Islands as a downward trend is continuing to be seen, and the light at the end of the tunnel is the brightest it has been since the pandemic started.

There have only been five deaths reported today, but January still finishes with the highest number of deaths and the greatest hospital pressure than at any point since that first case, which is what is preventing restrictions from being lifted at this stage.

On Thursday the Governing Council will meet as usual to review the epidemiological report from the Public Health committee, and they will be under pressure to start reviewing or relaxing some measures to fall in line with other countries as the spread of Omicron starts to ease and vaccinations continue at a rapid pace.

It’s going to be an interesting few weeks and the word ‘normality’ doesn’t seem far away, so watch this space as we’ll continue to report it as long as it takes.
