Nine pregnant women are hospitalized with Covid in the Canary Islands

The Ministry of Health has informed that there are nine pregnant women hospitalized with coronavirus in the Canary Islands, seven of them are in Tenerife, and fortunately, none are in a serious condition.

The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria (Hunsc) has four pregnant women admitted to the ward, while the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) another three, and the Hospital Insular Materno Infantil, two, according to Mercedes Prieto, the medical director of the Gran Canaria Hospital Complex.

The doctor is encouraging pregnant women to get vaccinated, since they are not exempt from being infected and, in the case of being positive, they would have a milder condition if they are immunised. "They have to follow the recommendations of their responsible doctor, but yes, they have to be vaccinated," she insisted.

The Ministry's Public Health Commission prioritized this week to accelerate the vaccination of women less than six months pregnant so that they are fully immunised at the period in which Covid would cause more complications during their pregnancy, which is at the end of the second trimester and during the third.
