Man arrested for stealing gold bars worth over €53,000 in the Canary Islands

The Guardia Civil has arrested a man on the island of La Palma as the alleged perpetrator of a house robbery in which he is accused of stealing eight gold bars, valued at more than €53,000 at current market prices.

The investigation was launched after the victim filed a formal complaint with the Guardia Civil. The Territorial Judicial Police Team took charge of the case, opening an urgent investigation to locate the stolen gold before it could be sold or smuggled off the island.

Given the high value and portability of the gold bars, customs and fiscal units ramped up controls at La Palma’s port and airport, inspecting passengers and luggage for signs of them.

Simultaneously, local security patrols increased their checks on people and vehicles around the island, hoping to uncover leads or recover the stolen property.

Investigators from several Guardia Civil units in La Palma conducted a detailed analysis of the break-in, including the modus operandi and forensic evidence gathered at the scene. Their efforts led to the swift arrest of the suspect just days after the crime happened, and the stolen gold was fully recovered.

Thanks to the strength of the evidence compiled during the investigation, the presiding judicial authority has ordered the provisional imprisonment of the accused while proceedings continue.
