The Gran Canaria Cabildo has ordered the suspension of all organised public and private events from 12 noon today, Sunday 8th November, as Storm Bruna approaches the island.
The restriction applies across the island, covering indoor venues as well as outdoor spaces, and will remain in force until further notice.
Cultural, sporting, recreational and festive activities are affected, regardless of how many people are expected to attend. Essential services and operations needed to manage the emergency are exempt.
The order significantly extends the restrictions previously reported, which included the closure of recreational areas, campsites and hostels. Indoor events are now also covered by the suspension.
The wider measures form part of an update to Gran Canaria’s island emergency plan, known as PEIN. The Cabildo expects the storm’s most significant effects from midday, with heavy rain, strong gusts, thunderstorms and adverse coastal conditions.
For residents and holidaymakers in Las Palmas, Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico and elsewhere on the island, the advice is to check directly with organisers before travelling to any scheduled event.
The suspension concerns organised activities and gatherings; it should not be interpreted as an announcement that every shop, restaurant or other business must close.
The disruption has already affected the island’s cultural programme. The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus has cancelled today’s Trío Reinecke concert, scheduled for noon, and Víctor Manuel’s performance, which was due to take place at 7.00pm.
The venue says tickets will be refunded through the original purchasing channel. For tickets bought at the box office, the refund period runs from 11th November to 11th December.
The Cabildo has instructed councils, organisers and those responsible for venues to implement the restrictions. It is also asking the public to avoid unnecessary journeys, particularly during the strongest phase of the storm, and follow official updates.
Anyone who needs to drive should favour main roads, allow extra braking distance and avoid crossing flooded roads or ravines.
There is currently no confirmed finishing time for the suspension. Further changes will depend on the weather and subsequent official announcements.
