Aldi are on their way to the Canary Islands
The German supermarket chain Aldi, is preparing to open a chain of 21 stores in the Canary Islands over the next few years. The company, which operates 1,052 supermarkets in Spain through its subsidiary Aldi Supermercados SL, will open its logistics centre in the municipality of Telde in Gran Canaria, and will open the first stores next year.
A spokesperson said: "We cannot yet confirm the specific locations or the number of establishments that will be opened, what we can say is that our goal will be to reach the maximum number of Canarian customers, during 2022 and the next few years.”
Aldi has 2% of the market share in Spain, and by the end of the year will have more than 6,000 employees in Spain in 350 establishments. Expansion through the Canary Islands will arrive in 2022 and will maintain growth in the rest of the country, which was hampered last year by Covid.
The arrival of Aldi in the Canary Islands will mean greater competition in the market. The new operator will have to compete with the heavyweights of the mass consumer sector (hyper and super) on the islands. In this sense, and according to the latest data provided by the Retail Data consultancy, the Canary Islands closed 2020 with a total of 1,052 mass consumption establishments.
Despite Covid, Dinosol remained the market leader in 2020 in number of square metres and establishments. According to data from the Data Retail consultancy, Dinosol closed last year with 261 establishments (4 more) and 30% of the commercial surface of the islands. In second place Mercadona was placed with 85 establishments (the same as in 2019) and 128,921 square metres, 20% of the surface.
