Holidaymakers stuck for several hours in queues at Timanfaya park in Lanzarote

The start of July has seen renewed frustration for tourists and residents alike, as long queues have once again formed at the entrance to the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire) in Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park.

Footage shows hundreds of vehicles clogging the road linking Tinajo and Yaiza, as visitors wait to access the island’s most visited cultural and tourist attraction.

It's a recurring issue that prompted the Canary Islands Government to urge the Lanzarote Cabildo to take action to regulate traffic and improve access to the area back in early June.

On Tuesday morning, the situation was so severe that the Guardia Civil was called in to manage the congestion.

Entrance to Montañas del Fuego costs €22 for adults and €11 for children aged between 7 and 12. Children under 6 can enter for free. Canary Islands residents benefit from a discount, with adult tickets priced at €17.50 and children’s tickets at €8.75.

Although tickets can be purchased in advance online, only 250 tickets are available each day that guarantee access until 2:00pm. At present, the system does not offer timed entry slots to help ease the flow of visitors.

As of Tuesday, online tickets for the site are sold out through to Thursday, though there is still availability for the weekend.
