Bonfires, fireworks, live music and midnight dips in the sea will light up Tenerife tomorrow night (Tuesday) as the island celebrates one of its most magical traditions – the Night of San Juan.
From the beaches of Los Cristianos to the waterfront of Puerto de la Cruz, thousands of residents and visitors are expected to gather on 23rd June to welcome the arrival of summer with fire, music and centuries-old rituals.
For many, San Juan is a chance to leave behind bad luck and make wishes for the months ahead. For others, it is simply one of the biggest and most enjoyable nights of the year.
Puerto de la Cruz: One of Tenerife’s Most Iconic Celebrations
Puerto de la Cruz remains one of the island’s most popular destinations for San Juan festivities. Celebrations begin at 6:30pm with the traditional procession of the San Juan effigy from the Municipal Market to the Peñón area, passing the historic Castillo de San Felipe.
Live entertainment starts at 9:00pm with a performance by Caracolas and their show Matria. The main bonfire at Playa Jardín will be lit at 10:00pm, followed by performances from Jeita at 11:00pm and a tribute to Maná by La Chalana at 1:00am.
The Famous Goat Bathing Tradition
San Juan in Puerto de la Cruz continues into the following morning with one of Tenerife’s most unique traditions. On 24th June, local farmers lead their goats into the sea at the harbour in a centuries-old custom believed to purify the animals and promote fertility.
The tradition, which has roots in the island’s pre-Hispanic heritage, has become one of the most recognisable images of San Juan celebrations in the Canary Islands.
Los Cristianos: The South’s Biggest Gathering
In southern Tenerife, Los Cristianos Beach is expected to attract large crowds for an evening of music, parades and celebrations by the sea. The programme includes batucada drumming groups, street entertainment and live performances before the lighting of the main bonfire.
As midnight approaches, many revellers will take part in one of San Juan’s best-known rituals by entering the sea, a symbolic act believed to bring renewal and good fortune.
Important Rules for Private Bonfires in Arona
Residents wishing to organise private bonfires on private land in Arona must have obtained prior authorisation from the Town Hall. Approved bonfires may only be lit between 8:00pm on 23rd June and 1:00am on 24th June.
Authorities have imposed strict safety regulations. Bonfires must not exceed three metres in height or diameter and must be located at least 100 metres away from buildings, vehicles, utility lines, street furniture and other bonfires.
Puerto de Santiago’s Beach Party
On Tenerife’s west coast, Puerto de Santiago will host its own San Juan celebration from 7:00pm on 23rd June.
The evening will feature DJs, live entertainment and a Zumba session led by Pierre before the main bonfire is lit at 10:00pm.
A fireworks display and special lighting show will accompany the bonfire, while a final midnight fireworks finale will mark the official arrival of San Juan Day.
Santa Cruz Celebrates by the Sea
The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will once again host celebrations at several popular coastal locations, including Las Teresitas Beach and Los Charcos de Valleseco.
Local authorities have reminded residents that bonfires are only permitted in authorised areas and must comply with safety regulations.
One of Santa Cruz’s largest events will take place at Los Charcos de Valleseco between 4:00pm and 12:30am.
Visitors can enjoy live performances from orchestras including Sabrosa, La Maquinaria, Son Canarí and Iván Cacú, alongside food trucks and water-based attractions.
In the Acorán area of Santa Cruz, celebrations begin at 7:00pm with a performance by the Topin Orchestra.
The traditional bonfire will be lit at 9:00pm, followed by live music from David Pérez from 9:30pm onwards.
A Night of Tradition and Celebration
Whether you prefer traditional rituals, live music, fireworks or simply watching the bonfires burn beside the sea, San Juan remains one of Tenerife’s most cherished celebrations.
Authorities are urging those attending to follow safety advice, use designated celebration areas and respect local regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable night for everyone.
With warm weather forecast and events taking place across the island, thousands are expected to gather on Tenerife’s beaches to welcome summer in true Canarian style.
