Today, Easter Thursday (2nd April), is one of the most important public holidays in the Canary Islands. As a non-replaceable national holiday, many businesses will adjust their opening hours, though regional rules in the archipelago ensure that both residents and tourists can still access essential shops and services.

Under regulations set by the Government of the Canary Islands, businesses located in designated high-tourism areas are allowed to open as usual. This means that key tourist hotspots will remain lively and operational throughout the Easter bank holidays.

Supermarkets: Reduced Hours but Mostly Open

For many households, food shopping is a priority during the holiday. Mercadona has confirmed that most of its stores will open on a half-day schedule, typically from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Meanwhile, other major supermarket chains including HiperDino, Lidl, Aldi, and El Corte Inglés supermarkets are expected to operate largely as normal.

Local groups such as Jesuman, TuTrébol, TuAlteza and La Hucha also plan to keep their stores open on regular hours to meet increased demand.

Shopping Centres: Business as Usual in Tourist Areas

Retail and leisure activities will continue uninterrupted in the main commercial zones. Shopping centres such as Siam Mall (south Tenerife) and Open Mall (Lanzarote), will remain open as usual.

Large retail outlets including Alcampo, Carrefour, MediaMarkt, and El Corte Inglés will also open their doors from 10:00am to 10:00pm.

Essential Services and Eating Out

Beyond shopping, key services across the island will continue to operate:

  • Pharmacies: On-duty chemists will provide 24-hour service and emergency cover.
  • Petrol stations: Most fuel stations will remain open as normal, supporting travel across the island.
  • Bakeries and 24-hour shops: Smaller food outlets and bakeries will stay open to serve local demand.
  • Bars and restaurants: Opening hours are at the discretion of owners, but coastal areas are expected to be busy, with many venues extending terrace hours by an extra hour.
